Emirates chief executive officer Tim Clark has indicated that the airline won't order new aircraft until it is more confident that their engines can deliver promised performance and reliability.

“We would be foolish to start adjusting or coming up with new contracts until we are absolutely sure these aircraft are going to do what they said they were going to do," he told a media briefing.

In February the airline cancelled orders for 39 Airbus A380s and signed instead a heads of agreement for 40 A330-900s and 300 A350-900s.

Clark said that Emirates would have completed a contract for A350s and A330neos earlier this year were it not for concerns about their Rolls-Royce engines.

Emirates has complained often about issues with the Trent 900 engines of some of its A380 fleet.

However, it also has concerns about the GE9X engines that will power the 150 Boeing 777X aircraft it has on order.

Problems with that engine type have delayed development of the 777X.
